What Are You Doing Now?
Aside from my full-time position, I am working on a 'green' affordable modular housing project soon to be built in Grand Junction, CO. with 2 business partners. We hope to bring this housing model to Chicago to provide affordable housing to those in need. Sustainably constructed housing offers much lower maintainance costs, lower or completely eliminated utility bills thus, zero-energy and clean indoor air.

Oh yes, and training for the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer set for this June in Chicago! Training; a new word in my vocabulary. Visit my fundraising site and blog at http://tinyurl.com/modkat7-avonwalk. To learn more and/or donate.

Today I walked 3.6 miles! I thought either my lower back, knees or feet would hurt, nope none of the above it was my hip joints. Hopefully with continual walking and some yoga and pilates thrown in there I can over come it. I have to admit that one of my fears toward training was that it would highlight my 'age'. When actually it was my non-movement oriented life style that did that. So I walk.

Ann's Avon Walk Update 3.15.09

Dear Classmates,

With 82-days left, finally the weather has made it possible for me to walk outdoors. There is a nice little park near where I live that has a walking path around a 9-hole golf course and other playing fields. The whole loop is about 1.2 miles. I did one loop on Saturday and one loop on Sunday. Next weekend I plan to at least double that distance. There are two weekend organized training walks along the lake shore but, 9am on the weekend? Not quite there yet. I do hope and expec… Continue

Avon Walk for Breast Cancer

Avon Walk for Breast Cancer in Chicago June 6 & 7

I have decided to participate in Avon Walk for Breast Cancer. Yep, I got myself into something big here, nothing I have ever physically done before. The words 'training' and 'marathon' are new words in my vocabulary. With this commitment I not only help others who are fighting the fight of their lives, I also help my self. My self needing to kick my couch potato ways to the curb. I am 42 and out of shape. Although I eat a heathly vegan diet,… Continue

Sounds like you have an incredible career as well as a great family!! You were always so smart; I'm not shocked you're making a huge difference in the world! Haven't been to Chicago for decades but loved Rush Street and downtown Chicago during Thanksgiving time. It's amazing! It'll be cool to visit at the reunion if I can make it. Be blessed!

So funny that you would remember that. I also remember being at your house and learning how to knit in one of our meetings. Dont realize how fun those day were till you are all grown up. How have the years been treating you? Are you still in Lansing? I am in Kansas but still get there about 2 times a year to see my family. We usually try to get together and go out, love for you to join us...Lisa

Hi, Ann! I sent you an invitation to connect on LinkedIn. My profile is at http://www.linkedin.com/in/jcmatthews . You haven't changed much and it's good to hear from you after all these years. I can really see you as an architect and Chicago is a great place to do it. I once took an architectural tour of Chicago. The breast cancer walk is a great cause. My wife is a survivor since 2003 and two of my aunts are dealing with it now. Last Labor Day, I completed the DALMAC bicycle ride from East Lansing to Mackinaw Bridge, a touring distance of 330 miles, in four days. I found that training consistently was more important than the actual amount of time you spend training. For me, the key was in being able to push myself when I felt like stopping. Just set a schedule and try to stick to it and you will do fine. If you break your schedule, don't punish yourself and don't try to make up for lost training time. Just start from where you are and endeavor to not let it happen again. Good luck and have fun. ----- James

Hi, Ann! It's so good to hear from you after all these years. You haven't changed much at all. I'll bet you could go back to Sexton and mix right in with the students. That's a great thing you're doing with the breast cancer walk. My wife is a breast cancer survivor since 2003 and two of my aunts are dealing with the disease right now. Just stay focused on the goal and train consistently until June and you will do fine. I have found that it's not really how much you train but how consistently you train that really matters. I speak from some experience because last Labor Day, I completed the DALMAC bicycle ride from East Lansing to Mackinaw Bridge. I rode a distance of 330 miles in 4 days. The first two days were rough but the last two were better after I adjusted to the pace. Cycling or stationary biking is a great way to build up stamina. Good luck and hang in there.
